They need to do some modifications on the engine to make it work with an UAV. Maybe they are already doing tests internally. Oh btw HTT-40 uses TPE331-12B variant while MQ-9B uses TPE331-10 variant of the engine..

So long? This is a new project, different from MALE drones. We didn't had apt propulsions in terms of piston engine (both our own designed and made or license made). HALE programme started on some years back. Both are separate projects. Problem was DRDO chief giving the excuse of "Our UAV projects are stuck due to lack of propulsion".

Infact DRDO can make a jet-powered HALE drone with STFE Manik.

If it was completely domestically produced and used 4x AB kaveri engines, or even 4x new JV 110kN engine. It could considerably help nurture a stronger domestic aviation industry, and provide boost to engine funding.

12 tons sounds low but if it has very big weapons bay it could potentially still hold 4x Brahmos-A's

If it had Kaveri engines . India can't even make a 95 kN engine . Just forget about making 5 gen engines . This is another waste of money if true .

I think the 12,000km figure is wrong if the bomber project is real. I think they mistakenly used the Tu-160 range. The article says the DRDO engineer said;
“We are looking at the TU-160 as a regional model and adapting what suits our needs best.”

GE-414 is much smaller engine than the NK-32 used on tu-160. To match thrust of 4x NK-32 like Tu-160, you would need 10x GE-414 engines.

Given the specifications of a regional bomber model, that suits India's needs, and a stated payload of 4x brahmos missile, payload capacity of 12 tons. I would expect a bomber with a mtow of 100 tonnes. Range 4,000-5,000 km, using a similar swing-wing design like the Tu-160 can give the ability to supersonic dash. This would be enough for India's strategic needs. In comparison, the TU-160 is the worlds heaviest bomber with mtow of 275 tonnes.

I think the swing wing and supersonic design was why they referenced it as a regional Tu-160.

Because developing bomber will take really long time, I hope the engineers will use domestic engine like Kaveri 2.0 or 110kN JV engine. There should be enough time to develop indian engine by then.

People can act like Su-30MKI can act as regional bomber, but it has little to no stealth, a new supersonic bomber can be made with composites and have RAM coatings similar to AMCA giving low cross section.
Even if the Su-30MKI has payload of 8 tonns, which is almost the stated 12 tonnes, it cannot be compared as Su-30MKI can only carry a singular brahmos missile, and likely cannot carry future air launched ballistic missile.

a 100 tons low observable supersonic regional bomber with 4,000-5,000km range and carry 4x brahmos will bring a lot of tactical and strategic advantages to indian airforce. If given a big radar, it can potentially serve as fighter or awacs by carrying long range AAM to counter chinki 6th gen aircraft. Like how USA is saying the B-21 raider can carry AAM, but a supersonic aircraft will have even better performance.
