Really easy to answer. It was because in the last election, they made it super easy to cast ballots by mail. There were a lot of mail in ballots the last time. A lot of Americans are just too plain lazy to get up and go vote because it takes too much time to vote. So a lot of them abstain. And besides, we are not done counting the votes, so more votes will come in. California still has about 5.5 million votes left to count.
