ARCHER-NG is an indigenously developed Weaponized Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV used for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) and Strike missions. It has Line of Sight (LoS) range of 250 kms and Beyond Line of Sight (BLoS) up to 1000 kms.
It can operate at altitude up to 30000 ft with an endurance of 18+ hours

Technology Used : Composite Airframe Structure, Piston Engine Propulsion, Dual redundant FCS, Datalink, ATOL, EO/SAR, EW Payload. AGCS, GDT, SATCOM
Application : Used for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions, Artillery fire corrections, Battlefield post-strike assessment.
Status : Realization of the UAV through DcPP is under progress. Maiden flight trials is planned in July 2023.

lab based out of New Thippasandra in Bengaluru. ArcherNG, a single engine twin boom SETB- configuration MALE UAV is expected to conduct its maiden flight very soon. A military source confirms to TMH that the high-speed taxi trials HSTT for ArcherNG has been completed.Efforts are on to fly the UAV ahead of the upcoming Bengaluru Air Show, expected to take off on Feb 10, 2025. "Else, before March Archer-NG will have its first flight," adds the source.Interestingly, this UAV with an all-up-weight of 1700 kg, was scheduled to fly in the first quarter of 2024 and sources failed to give a concrete reason for the one-year delay. Archer-NG is expected to meet the specifications of the now-downgraded project TAPAS (earlier R-II).It will be a weaponized UAV using the same avionics, software, Ground Control Station and Ground Data Terminal developed for TAPAS.Archer-NG can also carry 400kg of weapons and the Tri-Services Command (CINCAN) based out of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have shown interest in this new desi UAV.New-look Archer’sfirst flight too soonThe first flight of Archer UAV (earlier Rustom-1/ different from NG) too is expected to take place very soon in its new avatar. Though Archer, a SRUAV, has flown earlier and even demonstrated weapon delivery capabilities, the current one has a lightweight airframe capable of carrying anti-tank weapons and bombs.With the Godrej-manufactured airframe, Archer is now lighter by 80kg and is said to be capable of carrying weapon of equivalent weight. It can cater to the needs of ISTAR & in armed roles.Archer is claimed to be very similar to Byraktar-TB-2 of Turkey and much superior to the Israeli Searcher-MkII, operated by the Indian Navy till recently.BEL is the development-cum-production-partner for DRDO's Archer programme.The developments of Archer and Archer-NG programmes have been very keenly watched by the DRDO headquarters, with Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat wanting ADE to step on the gas. It will bridge the gap in cost effectiveness solution to the requirement of effective UAVs with #MakeinIndia initiative. “ADE needs to prove its might by delivering products that can be inducted by users. The new DG Aero of DRDO (Dr K Rajalakshmi Menon) has been given the mandate by HQ to be firm on projects that are lagging,” an official at DRDO HQ told TMH.
