You'd be "shocked" to know how many chips TSMC makes on 28nm, 40nm, 65nm et al.

when have Indian companies designed anything original in consumer electronics category for Indian mass market?

Except they don't even design things these days; it's almost all from China or Vietnam. Chips aren't even a part of the debate when they're buying most of these products completely.

If you are moving from 14nm to 5nm then you will see a noticeable difference in power consumption, performance and longevity for phones and desktop/laptops.

Even for desktop/laptops, 5nm processor will do wonders if coming from 14nm, it will be astronomical if coming from 28nm.

You aren't really competing at sub-10nm with TSMC; you're also competing against Apple, QC, AMD, Intel, Mediatek, Nvidia, among others. Unless you meant just the part about fabs?

they just blindly follow global trends, to save production costs.

Every appliance has chip(s) in them, including your TV, washing machine, cars or any other type of automobile, mixer, wifi router what have you.
The 5nm 3nm stuff going into phones or computers isn't the be all and end all of everything, we have to start small.

As for market, it is up to the Dhandhos to hawk their wares to other businesses, doesn't have to be Indian or India-focused, can be some foreign company with some exotic requirement also.

yes, iphone and samsung phones use 5nm, 14nm and 28nm.

if apple and samsung decide that they would like some one to produce these chips here in India to support their assembly line, it could probably even happen.

my question was not on foreign owned i.p, rather domestic owned design and i.p.
more demand will make the business case stronger to invest in r&d and production within the country.
