Indian Air Force: News & Discussions

M88 was studied as a familly :

M88-2 : serially produced for Rafale.
M88-3 9Tons variant. Built and tested as prototyps (for UAE in a time, 2011, were they wanted a kind of super Rafale.
M88-4 : 10.5 Tons. Only a paper project.... except if it is this engine that is expected to power the SCAF prototyp. But between 2 prototyps to manually built for SCAF proto and a production line, SAFRAN need time. Not sure it is possible to meet Tejas 2 agenda.

There is also T-Rex M88 for Rafale F5.... no news so far, except that it is more and more evident that F5 will keep the actual Rafale frame, ie the T-Rex will ave the same overall dimensions than M88-2. Sure that new technologies will make T-Rex more powerfull than Legacy M88-2, but at what extent ? Not in the 98 KN league for sure.

Rd 33mk of mig29k can produce upto 90kn, it is enough for MK1A.
Mk2 will still need 10kn more, not sure if the thrust can be increased without russian help but at least it can help mk1a as chances of receiving f404 are slim to none.

What is the weight of RD33 ?
What dimensions ? does it fit the Tejas 2 frame?
life span is known to be shorter than western design.

=> Not a good option. Leave that to pak....

Yeah RD33 is the worst choice for an engine for Tejas. It's a smoke chimney with horrible fuel efficiency.

Yes it's for worst case scenario if burgericans fails to deliver engine again.
EUrojet engine uses several us component so they can influence it too.
So only french option is left which is heavily underpowered

Weight is around 150kg higher and yes we will need to modify the airframes to accommodate that engine.
Burgericans had prevented china from getting any Western jet engine they might do same to us unless we buy their jets

If burgericans refused to sell us anything maybe we can go with AL-31FP for Mk2. But that too will require significant modification to airframe.

They won't refuse, they will just take our money and never delivere the product just like they are doing with f404.

Not sure if modifying russian engines will be easier for us than working on new kaveri

Can it not be challenged in an American court based on the contract and punitive measures imposed for the delays? US judiciary is very efficient and with the right attorneys India can push the envelope if they have the balls to do it.
