I feel all our thinking around languages today is as per the old paradigm. Whichever language is popular is taught which in turn either swallows up the minor languages or erases it .The modern tools also allow us to preserve these languages. Sustaining a minor language needs more effort than preserving it. All the literature, a terabyte load of audio of each language should be recorded and saved. Special PhDs should be granted to study in these languages. These are the efforts that will ensure the knowledge and the language itself is preserved and duly studied by the scholars. However the current approach is either way gonna kill our language diversity. Even in KA, MH, TN there are multiple minor languages. They will be killed by the more popular language. These languages eventually will be made irrelevant by English and Hindi. English in professional environment and Hindi for informal communication. Hindi too will die and be replaced by English eventually.
The Language wars in current form i suspect are not aimed at preserving the languages. They are aimed at chipping some of the identitarian votes from a Major National Party. We should seriously start thinking about how to preserve our languages.
I thought tools like Google Translate & forthcoming AI , GAI , ML , you name it will render this argument moot. That it's all the more vital to incorporate teaching in one's mother tongue inverting the three language formula with Hindi & English being taught as languages.
In special cases like TN , they're free to pursue what they want for eventually it's their students who'd be at a disadvantage. Then again who wants extra competition .
What needs be done is to get all our Sanskrit scholars together & compile a new dictionary of scientific terminologies which given Panini's excellent Ashtadhyai with its rules on etymology can be easily accomplished.
This then becomes your format for all the Indo Aryan language families. Repeat the exercise for Tamil & that'd serve as a template for the Dravidian languages.
The next goal should be purging the IA languages of FAT - Farsi Arabic & Turkic . Coming up with equivalent words or cognates in some cases isn't an issue. Getting it to become part of people's day to day vocabulary & speaking is . This once again is a multi generational thing .
What we have is a once in a millenium opportunity since AI will change the way we perceive the world at least in so far as communication goes which includes education & entertainment among many other subjects which in turn provides us with the ideal opportunity to train these models.
Alas ! I'm know I'm expecting too much from a government known to contain people which comes from a background that can easily qualify for as anti intellectual .
Evidently I was also wrong in the way the entire debate around the three language formula has unfolded especially in TN . Or perhaps I'm just getting ahead of the myself & the times. Perhaps we'd get there someday. Perhaps....
