Indian Sports Infrastructure

Don't want to sound like a socialist commie, but honestly we should spend this sum on refurbishing schools, hospitals and improving basic urban infra. Olympics is a vanity project imo.
Why do we think if we will spend money on hosting Olympics then we will be taking it out from funds for other project and schemes of the country?

Are we not going to grow till 2036 and become near $8-10 Trillion economy?

olympics would result in making of a world class fascility and stadiums those 8-9 billion owuld be invested in infra for shooting we would make ranges ,pools,stadiums and all i think it would be a big step up in our overall sports capabilities and if we start inverting slowly it wont burn our backs with fund shortage
lets say we start investing in olympics from next year we coulld easily build step wise spending 900m-1billion$ per year (would it suck funding yes ,is it waste i think no)

building infra for olympics is not the tough part relatively, maintaining them later is beyond the capacity of the cities they are located in, that has been the global experience so far.

in global financial system, loans are available for building infra, experiments are still going on globally to find the right solution to finance maintaining the big infra that has already been built especially the ones without revenue stream. when we hear abbreviations like PPP, BOT in the news, this is the part gormints and financial systems are trying to address. this is why gormint schools and hospitals end up the way they do, cost of maintenance keeps increasing year after year, and they don't have the revenue stream, and have to depend on gormint grants, grants which are basically loans gormint is taking on behalf of the people to keep the system afloat, because tax revenues are no where close to required levels.

who ever is backing the notion that olympics infra should be built, should also be ready to accept the fact that post-olympics that sports infra will fall into disrepair, simply because it is too costly. this is not an argument against gujarat's olympics bid, just saying be aware of it.

yeh lo, Olympics amdavad me karne ki bid daali thi woh toh nhi mila toh ab Commonwealth Games ka kar rhe

amdavad is overcrowded semi-developed urban hellhole of its own kind with dusty hot weather, summer olympics ke time par idhar above 40-42 deg cels temperature common hota hai - idhar cricket ke siwa aisa bada international games naa hi kare toh hamare liye achcha hoga

Your point might hold true for other nations but not really an issue for us. We do not have enough number of stadiums to begin with, so building good sporting infra would help.

Exhibit #1: We did not even have a cycling velodrome before CWG 2010 - our domestic competitions used to be held at old dilapidated concrete velodromes. Following CWG, the newly built modern velodrome was transformed into a national training centre and now we have started winning medals at international competitions.

Exhibit #2: Almost all of our football stadiums have athleics tracks around them - something that puts the athletes and the footballers in direct contention at times;

Exhibit #3: Almost the entirety of our basketball 3x3 infra is built by donations and grants from the NBA - we did not have dedicated 3x3 facilities up until very recently. Fast forward to 2025, our 3x3 basketball team has reached Asian Q and are also Asian u20 silver medallists (lost to Japan in the finals).

Exhibit #4: No dedicated winter sports facilities exist in the country. They even delayed Khelo India Winter Games because it did not snow enough in February (yes, even in 2025, our domestic competitions are held on natural ice courses);

Building world class venues and hosting professional franchise based leagues should be a medium term policy goal for us. The burgerboys and the East Asians have even made business cases out of it - their professional league systems are super popular, churn out profits for the owners and generate revenue for the local gormints (important source of revenue for the local/state/regional govt bodies).

I have read reports that the gormint is looking to distribute the venues all across the nation (ie, only a few events will be hosted in Ahmedabad). If true, that is a welcome development - it makes sense to build decentralized sporting infra.

We already host lots of professional franchise leagues but unfortunately many of them have shut down due to poor viewership. You can't make business out of it without significant viewership. Hockey India League restarted again in 2025 but it has very poor viewership and will probably shut down again in future. IPL is successful because it has viewership which turns into big sponsorship and broadcasting money. Only other successful league is PKL and ISL (debatable). Muricans and East Asians not just support different sports but also watch college, school tournaments. Indians need to start watching other sports too along with cricket.

Hockey India League had decent viewership even back in 2013. The League shut down because they failed to make a good business case and struggled with cost overruns. Something they have tried solving by hosting a centralized season in the latest edition.

Imo, these franchise leagues are targeting the wrong audience - there is a big market beyond the usual tier 1 cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. They should go after the tier 2/3 cities instead. Look how popular Jamshedpur FC and the Odisha based hockey teams are. Look at the popularity of the the local volleyball/basketball tourneys of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
