4 Naxals gunned down in Gadchiroli, one in Sukma​

In a joint operation, the police's special commando unit C-60 and the CRPF killed four Maoists in an encounter along the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border in Gadchiroli district on Friday, a senior official said.

The official, in a statement, said based on credible intelligence inputs about the presence of Maoists formations on the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border near a recently opened Forward Operating Base in the Kawande area, an operation was launched on Thursday afternoon. A dozen C-60 parties (300 commandoes) and a component of the CRPF launched the operation from Kawande and Nelgunda areas towards the banks of the Indravati river amidst heavy rains.

Meanwhile, a Naxalite was killed in an encounter with security personnel in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, a police official said on Friday.

The gunfight broke out on Thursday evening in a forest under the jurisdiction of the Kistaram police station area when a joint team of security personnel was out on an anti-Naxal operation, he said.

I was reading old articles from 2010 on the Maoist issue and it occurred to me that we lived in horrifying times. It is only through the tapasya of our ancient Rishis and Rishikas that this nation is alive today.

• Naxal ORBAT and fighting doctrine

First, the merger of the two most potent groups -- the PWG and the MCC -- has given synergy to the new outfit in terms of strength, capability, and resources, both human and material, for launching attacks on the security forces. The combined strength of the CPI-Maoist is estimated to be 15,000 armed cadres, which is huge compared to the 3,000 militants in Kashmir at the peak of the militancy.

Second, the merger has provided a large swathe of India -- from Bihar to Andhra Pradesh -- for the Maoists to move, both for operations and safe havens. While state police forces are restricted by jurisdiction and a lack of interstate coordination, the Maoists are not. This gives them an upper hand and the ability to carry out audacious attacks across the states at will.

Third, while the Naxals in the late 1960s used bows, arrows, axes, pistols and small bombs to annihilate 'class enemies', the Maoists (Naxals in their new avatar), have an array of sophisticated and lethal weapons which include AK-47s, light machine guns, INSAS rifles, self-loading rifles, grenades, mortars, rocket launchers, among others.

These have been acquired through raids on police armouries and snatching of arms of the policemen killed in ambush, apart from the supply of weapons by the LTTE and Nepalese Maoists. The easy availability of explosives in the Red Corridor has facilitated the laying of landmines to kill troops with most devastating effect. The Maoists have R&D units which fabricate and upgrade weaponry, including improvised explosive devices, which have added to the strike power of the Maoists.

Lalgarh, if you remember, has been on the boil since last November when a landmine exploded near Bhadutala on the route of the convoy of West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and then central ministers Ram Vilas Paswan and Jiten Prasada.

Soon after, the police launched a massive combing operation and arrested local school students and harassed tribal women.

One night the Naxals had come to the village and taken her away. They did not force her, she says, but had spoken to her nicely. She was trained in armed combat and guerilla tactics; learned how to make and plant bombs, ambush police patrols and attack police posts. She also served in the Naxal medical team, administering injections and nursing injured comrades.

Her first assignment was to teach A B C D to the uneducated in the camp. On another assignment she struck a policeman with ten lathi blows while another comrade slit his throat.

Then one day disillusioned by her leaders, she wrote a letter to her comrades and left. They came back and asked her to return, but she refused. Fearful of the consequences on her three younger siblings because of her return, she surrendered to the police and has been working as a special police officer with the Chhattisgarh police.

"We tried -- with futility -- a number of times to storm this unit in the heart of their stronghold. We always failed till now. This time, we planned the operation well. But this wouldn't have been possible without the SPOs," the intelligence officer said.

"First, they are familiar with the terrain and could lead the troops through dense forests where we had never set foot before. Second, these are villages that they have lived all their lives in. They precisely knew each and every place where the Maoists were present."

Sources said the Maoists had the capability to produce arms and ammunition of the highest quality.

"From what I saw, the machines were capable of churning out SLRs (Self Loading Rifles) and .303s. No one -- baring probably the people most familiar with these weapons -- can make out the difference from the weapons the Maoists were making and the ones from our ordnance factories," the intelligence officer said.

These weapons were not short in terms of firepower either, sources said.

Another officer, who was part of the operation and did not want to be named, said: "These weapons fire just the same kind of ammunition that standard issue weapons do. Probably the only drawback is that their firing rate is lesser than that of the originals. If, for instance, a regular SLR fires 60 rounds per minute, these would fire 20 to 30 rounds per minute. But they can kill nevertheless."

Intelligence sources said weapons made in the factory were sent out to rebels across the swathe of land that the Maoists control across central India.

"The weapons made here were sent out to Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, and of course, were used in Chhattisgarh itself," the intelligence officer said.
Informed sources estimated that it would take the Maoists a decade if they had to rebuild the factory with similar infrastructure.

The destruction of the factory -- located in Dantewada's Singamadagu village -- is crucial because of the kind of firepower that it had been generating for the Maoist guerillas.

Two top Naxal leaders shot dead in Jharkhand encounter

The Latehar Police shot dead two top leaders of the banned outfit Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) in an early morning encounter Saturday in the forests of Latehar district.

According to Inspector General (IG) Operational Amol Homkar, a small action team comprising personnel from SP Latehar’s special squad and local police had launched a search operation in the jungles. Around dawn, as the team moved deeper into the forest, Naxalites opened fire, triggering a fierce gunbattle.

“Our team retaliated effectively. After the exchange of fire ceased, the bodies of two extremists were recovered,” IG Homkar said. “One of them has been confirmed as Pappu Lohara, the supremo of the JJMP who carried a bounty of Rs 10 lakh. The other is suspected to be Prabhat Ganjhu, who had a reward of Rs 5 lakh.”

CoBRA commando, Naxal killed in Chhattisgarh operation

A joint operation unfolded in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district. A CoBRA commando of the CRPF and a Naxalite died during the anti-Maoist operation. The operation occurred in Tumrel village. The 210th CoBRA battalion, DRG, and STF led the operation. Reports indicate one CoBRA commando sustained injuries. An Indian Air Force helicopter was deployed to evacuate the injured personnel from the site.

There was a book written in 2009 by a journalist about the Maoist movement in India, I am forgetting the name of the book. However, the book did indicate the face that a substantial amount in the form of donations to the Maoist movement comes from corporate hubs in Bangalore, Gurgaon etc. Now these donations are not from companies or organisations but from people working in them. What I could understand was, there are vast number of urban Naxals who are also working in India's private sector and who make monetary contributions to their cause. People working in media, advertising, PR , law firms etc would, according to me make up the bulk of such contributors however you do have outliers such as techies or MBA grads who have far left ideology. One sector which has to be looked into in great detail are law firms. 5 year integrated law programmes generally produce legal professionals who may harbour far left sympathies.
