Government of India is considering a range of military (kinetic) and diplomatic measures in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, targeting Pakistan for its direct role:
1. Sever or Significantly Reduce Diplomatic Ties: India could expel Pakistani intelligence operatives posing as diplomats in the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi and reclaim land allocated to the Pakistani High Commission.
2. Recall Diplomatic Staff: India may withdraw its diplomatic personnel from Islamabad, limiting bilateral communication to email only.
3. Suspend the Indus Water Treaty (IWT): India could fully suspend the IWT, citing Pakistan’s lack of cooperation despite multiple legal notices.
4. Brief International Community: India could brief the Diplomatic Corps and P5 nations (UN Security Council permanent members) in New Delhi on Pakistan’s alleged role in the Pahalgam attack.
5. Showcase Evidence to Foreign Envoys: India could organize visits for foreign ambassadors to the attack site in Baisaran, Pahalgam, and facilitate meetings with victims’ families to highlight the human toll and demand justice.
6. Halt Visa Issuance: India could impose a complete ban on issuing visas to Pakistani nationals.
7. Restrict Indian Travel to Pakistan: India could mandate a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for Indian citizens seeking Pakistani visas.
8. Close Kartarpur Corridor: India could suspend operations of the Kartarpur Corridor with immediate effect.
9. Cease All Trade: India could halt direct and indirect trade with Pakistan, including via third countries like the UAE.
10. End Border Ceremonies: India could discontinue the Wagah Border Flag Ceremony, Beating Retreat, and similar events at Husseinwala and RS Pura borders.
These measures aim to isolate Pakistan diplomatically, economically, and symbolically while addressing the security concerns arising from the Pahalgam terror attack.
Military options not mentioned as that is not to be discussed publicly. Military Ops aim to target Pakistan Army and Lashkar e Tayyiba.
