How about the accent? I have heard that the accents can be a give away...(?)
Not always. Malda, Murshidabad Ms have accents that sound similar. Also, some Bangla words and phrases are used by Ms exclusively (on both sides of the international border) - for instance, a Bangla speaking M will always say 'pani' irrespective of his/her citizenship while a Bangla speaking Indian H will use the word 'jal'.
It is even more difficult to distinguish between an Assamese miyas and a kanglu because the miyas are bangladeshis who settled <= 3 generations back.
At best, you can tell the Ms and the Hs apart.
