Accidentally spotted SLR 1C full auto while watching border in YouTube.
Anyone knew why 1C was not mass produced in India?why it had israeli like handguards and not full length hand guards like other SLR variants.Never saw one in real life though

I think full auto 7.62x51 mm fire was considered wasteful and inaccurate by the Indian Army which thought that a semi auto SLR would only be fired prone or with cover at an enemy from distance.

The BREN 1B was deemed to be sufficient for a SAW/LMG role and an SLR 1C full auto was considered redundant unless for LRP/Ghatak units (in frame).

The design was adopted sparingly to possibly provide a solution for mechanized units to fire from BMP firing ports while maneuvering since a BREN may have been too bulky and cumbersome in a constrained space.

For any close quarters combat, the 9x19mm 1A1 Carbine was deemed sufficient until the Indian Army came face to face with 7.62x39 mm AKs during IPKF (Sri Lanka) and Kashmir Insurgency at which point they became fixated upon the AK and finally in 2019 decided that the AK 203 would be the standard rifle.

simple, for cooling purposes
even other FAL based LMGs from the west had such handguards to expose the barrel as much as possible, as full auto mag dumps would heat the barrel up in no time, even with heavier barrel there, then you can also think it in terms of shedding some weight off as already the rifle variant was heavier then putting a heavy profile barrel would further weight it up...

Israeli LMG variant of FAL had shorter handguards than regular FAL, then metal shroud around the barrel with lots of vent holes, while Canadian and Australian FALO had bipod-as-handguards with wooden section around its feet, and when deployed it'd fully expose the barrel like this
