Chinese Economy Watch

Will China be in a position to launch attacks in 2027 given this population decline?
Here I have to be honest Nations like India or China have enough people even with population decline to stay powers for a long period.

in the case of China, it depends the level they industrilize their economy.
And If I am honest the size of India and China can only be compared if others nations sign free trade agreements, customs unions, and a common currency.
For Latin America that is our only way to remain viable in the future.

For BRICS it will be the same,
a common currency or at least a customs Unions is the only viable way to make BRICS a real block.

But a customs union to work well needs a very basic concept, companies from the block need to cooperate in the same way Europe does, it means common projects and freedom to operate.

The USA for example is forcing Mexico to ditch Chinese commerce, regardless it is good or bad, because companies like Ford work in both sides and Mexican suppliers also work along side American companies that is the reason the USA has rules of content origin with Canada and Mexico

Rules of content Origin would mean trade between BRICS nations would build things as a single nation does.

For example BYD will need to build in Europe but not only that it needs to respect rules of origin content from other European nations.

Otherwise they will pay tariffs like Chinese steel does in North America.
see:

-"However, Mr Singham warned that BYD would have to follow strict “rules of origin” on cars exported to Europe and the UK.

These require that a certain proportion of a car’s value comes from components made locally or tariffs are levied.

At present, that is set at 40pc but will rise to 55pc from 2027. The requirement for batteries is currently set at 30pc but will rise to 70pc over the period.

Mr Singham said: “They will have to be careful that there is serious manufacturing in Turkey – if what they are doing is just assembly, that would certainly not satisfy the rules."-

The reason why they build in Turkey and not Mexico is because the rules of origin in north america are higher percentage

And that is obvious if you see american car makers get their main profits from North America.

Population size doesn’t matter it’s the demographic distribution.

You don’t want a high average age or less young people than old people. All the productivity is eclipsed by health care costs and social security

true you are right buit that is you compare China versus India, but compared to nations Like Argentina the advantage of both India or China is overwhelming.

Will population decline affect them? you are absolutely right, but since they are so many many people, compared to most nations they will remain important,

if they industrilize a lot their economy; machinery will help a lot. I see it a lot in Japan, their economy is in frack decline but technology is helping them to make the fall slower

Bystanders quickly took out their phones to capture this shocking scene, but were stopped by two police officers who escaped from the burning car. In the video, we can clearly hear them shouting at the crowd, "Please don't take pictures" and "Delete the videos." These were classic lines from Chinese police. The government, which has allowed substandard electric vehicles to circulate in the market, is gradually facing the consequences.Spontaneous combustion incidents in China are not limited to vehicles. Recently, a video surfaced online showing a traffic signal also catching fire, emitting thick black smoke.

It is a bit stupid graphic if you do not explain that Russia has 1/10 of the Chinese population, Japan has 1/11 of the Chinese population or the USA 1/4 of Chinese population but americans have close to 860 cars per 1000 people while China has 223 cars per 1000 people, so what does it mean? easy americans are wealthier they own more cars so they use less subways.

The UK for example has barely 60 million people got it? so it is close 1/23 of the Chinese population so make it per capita and you find the british has an excellent subway system.

Also add Indians use a lot of Bicycles and scooters, so India replace subway with bikes and scooters.

those statistics are stupid if you do not expalin details

Indonesia112,000,000
China85,000,000

China's tech innovations benefit electricity development in Global South

(Xinhua) 15:02, July 15, 2024
BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- China is at the technological forefront of electricity development and has provided the world with experience and practices in electricity innovation, according to a report issued on the sidelines of a high-level conference recently held in Beijing.

At a sub-forum of the second high-level conference of the Forum on Global Action for Shared Development, the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) issued the Research on Global Electricity Development Index.

The sub-forum, which was held Friday, was themed on energy transition and sustainable development. It was organized by GEIDCO, a non-profit international organization headquartered in Beijing and dedicated to promoting sustainable energy development worldwide.

Guan Xiupeng, vice director of GEIDCO General Office, told Xinhua that China's vast territory, with diverse geographical features such as deserts, forests, plateaus and permafrost areas, has an impact on economic and social development.

"Based on such conditions, China has explored electricity technologies and development models that are suitable for its development and has accumulated a wealth of experience on project construction, which can also be shared with other countries, especially in the Global South," he added.

The research report mentioned that China is at the technological forefront in new energy power generation, Ultra High Voltage (UHV) power transmission, flexible direct current transmission, and the digitization and intelligentization of electricity systems.

Taking UHV for example. The development of UHV technology is driven by the long distance between China's clean energy resources, mostly in the western regions, and consumption centers in east China. It has not only solved the problem of long-distance, large-capacity power transmission but also realized the mass consumption of clean energy.

On the other side of the globe, UHV technology has found its place in Brazil, a country with abundant hydropower resource in tropical rainforest in its northern part, and densely populated areas in the south.

The State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), a leading state-owned utility company, has applied the technologies and experience earned at home to this South American country, including 800kV UHV direct current transmission technology, which sends electricity from the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant in Para state to big cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

The mega-project traverses a vast area, stretching more than 2,000 km over tropical rainforests and rivers, to supply the power consumption of some 22 million people, about 10 percent of the Brazilian population.

As of now, 180 billion kWh hydropower has been delivered via the project, equivalent to saving 64 million tonnes of standard coal or cutting 170 million tonnes of CO2 emission.

The project strictly complies to environmental regulations. When laying power transmission lines, the engineering teams bypassed the local indigenous settlements and ecological conservation areas in accordance with local laws and regulations. In 2019, it was recognized as the best social and environmental management practice in Brazil.

Besides the project construction, Chinese companies also promote technology transfer by training local talent for long-term operation and maintenance, with the smart electricity meter project in Saudi Arabia as one such example.

The agreement for the project was signed by SGCC and Saudi Electricity Company in 2019, and included the installation of 5 million electricity meters and the development of supporting facilities. Technology services, equipment integration, trial tests, and maintenance and personnel training were also part of the project, which was the largest deployment of smart electricity meters in the world at the time.

Deng Guoxue, one of the project experts from SGCC, was busy not only with installation work, but also with running local personnel training classes. He developed a set of English training materials, including textbooks, lecture notes and student manuals for his Saudi colleagues.

Ihab Mohammad, one of the local trainees, said he had witnessed the diligence, responsibility and professionalism of the SGCC employees, who have completed a high-quality project with their wisdom and hardwork to benefit the local people.

The Chinese contractors not only build power systems, but also bring domestic experience to the field of environmental protection, enhancing the overall environmental level of the projects.

Located in the coastal, sandy area of Binh Dinh Province in Vietnam, the Phu My 330-megawatt photovoltaic power station is a major new energy project in Vietnam's National Power Development Plan 7, and is the largest photovoltaic power station in central Vietnam.

The Power Construction Corporation of China, the project contractor, also considered the various application potentials during the project's design, such as expansion of energy storage, hydrogen and ammonia production, and desalination of seawater by green electricity.

As of the end of April 2023, the project had generated and sent a total of 695 million kWh of electricity to the grid, equivalent to cutting 670,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, or saving 220,000 tonnes of standard coal.

The project also transformed and utilized about 325 hectares of desertified and barren land, significantly reducing dust storms and improving local environment.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - When Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD opened its first Southeast Asian factory in Thailand earlier this month, the nation of 66 million people basked in the limelight and won praise for its industrial vision.

What, however, received less attention was an announcement by another big automobile manufacturer - Suzuki Motor - just a few weeks earlier that it will shutter a Thai factory that produced as many as 60,000 cars a year.

The Japanese automaker's move mirrors those by scores of other companies in Southeast Asia's second-biggest economy which is bearing the brunt of cheap imports from China and a slide in industrial competitiveness due to factors including rising energy prices and an ageing workforce.

Thailand has witnessed nearly 2,000 factory closures in the last year, upending its manufacturing sector that contributes nearly a quarter of its gross domestic product (GDP).

It is weighing on the $500 billion economy and on workers such as Chanpen Suetrong.

The 54-year-old spent nearly two decades at the V.M.C. Safety Glass factory in central Samut Prakan province, checking the automotive and building products that rolled off the production line.

Chanpen said she was unexpectedly told in April that the factory was shutting down, leaving her without a job.

"I don't have any savings. I have hundreds of thousands of baht of debt," said the sole breadwinner in a family of three that includes an ailing husband and a teenage daughter. "I'm old, where will I go to work? Who will hire me?"

Monchai Praepriwngam, a director at V.M.C. Safety Glass, declined to comment on why the factory closed.

The manufacturing sector's woes have left Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who took power last year, struggling to fulfil his promise of bringing average annual GDP growth to 5% over his four-year term, up from 1.73% in the past decade.

"The industrial sector has slumped and capacity utilisation has fallen below 60%," Srettha told parliament last week. "It is clear that the industry needs to adapt."

Supavud Saicheua, chairman of the state planning agency National Economic and Social Development Council, said Thailand's decades-long manufacturing-driven economic model is broken.

"The Chinese are now trying to export left, right and centre. Those cheap imports are really causing trouble," Supavud told Reuters.

"You have to change," Supavud said, arguing that Thailand should refocus on making products that China wasn't exporting while strengthening its agriculture sector. "No ifs or buts."

ADAPT, OR CLOSE

The factory closures between July 2023 and June 2024 increased 40% from the preceding 12 months, according to the latest Department of Industrial Works data that has not been previously reported.

As a result, job losses jumped by 80% during the same period, with more than 51,500 workers left without work, the data shows.

The number of new factory openings has also slowed down, with large factories closing and small factories opening instead, Kiatnakin Phatra Bank's research division said in a June note.

The impact has spread to industries that are the main driving force of the economy, including the automobile industry, it said.

Meanwhile, smaller manufacturers are grappling with a rise in production costs on the back of steepening energy prices and relatively high wages, said Sangchai Theerakulwanich, chairman of the Federation of Thai SME.

"We compete with multinational businesses," he said. "Manufacturers unable to adapt quickly had to close business or change to make something else."

Starting this month, Thailand is collecting a 7% value-added tax on cheap imported goods priced less than 1,500 Thai baht ($41), mostly from China, but such products are still exempted from customs duties.

Nava Chantanasurakon, vice chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, said his group has asked the government to look at measures to prevent tariff evasion amid the U.S.-China trade war and high barriers for some Chinese goods in other regions.

For now, Thailand's economy is projected to grow only about 2.5% this year - among the factors that have left a majority of Thais dissatisfied with Prime Minister Srettha's performance.

Srettha has argued that his party's controversial and delayed 500 billion-baht handout scheme that has met a barrage of criticism - including from the central bank - is essential: "It will be strong medicine to revive the economy."

Without a steady income, Chanpen said she was waiting for the 10,000 baht ($276) handout that 50 million Thais will be eligible to receive under the plan.

"The economy was bad during the previous government," she said, "but even after the new government has come, the economy is still as bad as before."

Cambodian PM welcomes Chinese EV giant BYD's plan to open automotive assembly plant in kingdom

(Xinhua) 09:04, July 16, 2024
PHNOM PENH, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Monday welcomed a giant Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD's plan to set up an automotive assembly plant in the Southeast Asian country.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Liu Xueliang, general manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh, said a news release posted on the prime minister's official Telegram channel.

"BYD has planned to build an electric vehicle assembly plant in Cambodia, with the capacity of assembling 20,000 units per year for supplying domestic and international markets," the news release said.

The news release did not say when the assembly plant will be constructed.

EVs have gained popularity in Cambodia, thanks to their less expenditure on fuel costs and environmental friendliness.

Last week, the government unveiled the National Policy on Electric Vehicle (EV) Development 2024-2030, which aims to increase the number of EVs or electric cars to 30,000, the number of electric scooters to 720,000 and the number of three-wheeler electric vehicles to 20,000 by 2030.

Currently, Cambodia has registered a total of 1,614 electric cars, 914 electric scooters and 440 three-wheeler electric vehicles, said the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, adding that the three most popular EV brands in Cambodia are China's BYD, Japan's Toyota, and United States' Tesla.

But the chief source of renewable power growth has been the solar sector, which boosted electricity output by more than 75% over the first 9 months of 2023 from the same period in 2022.
Total Brazilian photovoltaic solar capacity has surpassed 30 gigawatts (GW) this year thanks to 4.4 GW of new capacity that has entered operation since January, according to the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).

Summary:
Since becoming the world's second largest economy, China has sought to improve its image as an essential partner for several countries around the world, as a way of expanding its sphere of influence and establishing strategic allies. As a result, South America appears as a perfect target for the Chinese, who have allocated around 130 billion dollars to various initiatives in the last decade, mainly infrastructure projects. However, it is noteworthy that some of these projects proposed by China for South American countries are on hold due to execution problems, with accusations of corruption and a lack of transparency in the agreements, leading to delays and cancellations. And in this video, we will understand why China's investments in South America were a failure, and what really motivated the Chinese to invest so much in the region.

Too competitive to ban?
According to DroneDJ, over 6,000 public safety agencies, police, and fire departments submitted comments to the Senate Armed Services Committee urging it to oppose the inclusion of the Countering CCP Drones Act.
“As the SASC meets behind closed doors, it’s hard to know exactly why the provision against DJI in the House version was left out of the Senate markup. There has been a lot of engagement in recent weeks from people who rely on our products for their businesses, their livelihoods, to save lives [firefighters and other emergency services], to spray their crops, and you certainly would hope that that has an impact on the thinking. But we don’t know,” Adam Welsh, head of global policy at DJI, tells AgFunderNews.
