Even in cricket, is our performance good? The entire team is full of chokers. We're lucky that South Africa is a bigger choker, else we wouldn't win that WC.
Another problem is that cricket doesn't require much fitness ot athleticism compared to other sports like football, so it's considered a lesser sport and only 5-6 good countries play globally.
Personally, I'd want our masses to be interested in Hockey and Football than Cricket.
Indian cricket team performance has been phenomenal over the past decade. These days they rarely lose a series and win the majority of their matches. This is in stark contrast to their performance in the 80s and 90s when they often lost most of their games.
As for choking in the South Africa game. The thing about T20 cricket is that it's highly unpredictable. Every top-tier team has either struggled or lost against a low-ranking side. South Africa almost lost to Nepal, Pakistan was famously defeated by the US, and Afghanistan knocked both New Zealand and Australia out of the tournament.
As for fitness, modern cricket requires a lot of fitness as it has become highly competitive, though not at the level of football or rugby.
Regarding global participation in the game.It is played by 60-70 countries at the Division 5 level.
The top 20 teams participate in the T20 World Cup, held every two years.
