India at Olympics

Why not somebody shared this untill now? Anyway,Again below par performance by archery team although kudos to brave lady for winning bronze.

But bronze will not fetch us the status that India wants.

Really disappointed with archery team, there was news of Korean coach famous disgruntled words too before the start of olympics.

This is for those who qualified, the amounts sponsors, patrons and players would have spent on qualifying tournaments would be even higher.

China's annual sports budget was 1 billion Yuan in 1988 i.e. $268 million. India's annual sports budget last year was $410 million.

$268 million in 1988 adjusted to inflation is, $690 million in 2023 vs $410 million India spent in 2023.

China won only 5 Gold medals in 1988. China increased their sports budget 3x for the next Olympics and they won 16 Gold.

no hope left for any medal today , only mixed team can win that too have to face the mighty koreans :):)

Mens Team Archery Quaterfinals

6th seeded Indian team lost to 16th seeded Turkish team.

40cr on Archery down the drain.

Just pumping money is not going to be enough , need to hire right coaching/support staff, identify right players and give mental conditioning to the players so that they don't underperform in big events.

Archery is simply let down Olympics after Olympics. Shooting also provide very low returns. These two are the one where we sent our large group. But still we are getting an combined 1-2 medals. On the other Chinese and Koreans come to event and just grab everything.

we can't move into top 20 without winning 2-3 golds.
Again a pathetic performance in archery after putting 40cr not even a bronze in sight . no hope for medal other than male individual service player - Bommadevara Dhiraj

bhai sahab...40 crore or 5 million dollar is too less, even for one game. if u want top countries like results, u need to spend their kind of money. in india case (which hv very little infrastructure etc) we hv to spend even 3-4 times more than developed countries. but in reality, we can gradually increase money in sports, so our performance will also gradually increase. bhai 40 crore cricket me 3-4 player kama rahe, but fir bhi t20 world cup 16-17 saal baad aa raha india.

How much of it has to do with temperament? These athletes come from very poor backgrounds. They may feel intimidated looking at other countries. What can the SAI do to improve this further. Looking at the medals tally, even USA is not in top 5..
Looks like India is always ending at 4th, 5th, or 6th in each event

To solve this problem we need to hire good Mental Conditioning coaches and increase the stakes in domestic events.

Our players bow down due to pressure, as final events approaches players cant bear that moment, we need good coach who can guide them to perform under pressure.

Overall good day for us.

Shooting Bronze.
Hockey team entering into QF. But they need to beat Belgium or Australia to boost the confidence.
Archery - R32 win
Badminton - Men Doubles entering QF.

These countries are poor but have always had a genetic advantage in niche sports.

Ethiopians and Kenyans have genetic advantage in long distance running. Jamaicans when it comes to sprinting.

Can you point out what genetic advantage Indians have when it comes to any niche Sport?

Do you deny that 95% Indian parents will stop their kids from taking up sports seriously?

Stop giving some exceptions as an example.

The wealthier a country is, the higher the probability is that kids are encouraged to take up sports.
It is just about developing sports as a culture. The school infra plays a very important role. Add a sophisticated Physical education syllabus imparted by skilled coaches and round-the-clock sports events..bingo, You get the talent pool good enough to beat so-called Genetic hindrances.

How many of schools in India have olympic size swimming pools? My son is 5 years old and he already takes lessons in Swimming in the school district's olympic size swimming pool here in USA. There is an aquatics, athletics program in each school apart from team sports like basketball, baseball, football and soccer. In India we hardly even have a playground for kids.. Not to mention the pathetic mindset in India against sports. we only crib every 4 years when other countries win more medals/capita.

A country of 1.4 Billion with 100+ unicorns and 5th largest economy but cannot win 20 medals out of 600 (gold+silver+bronze).. we are 1/4 of human population, simple math tells me India should win a minimum of 80-100 medals at these events.

The wealth per capita argument does make sense. Most public schools in India can't even afford proper benches for students to sit on so forget about swimming pools. Extracurriculars simply put are simply an after thought even in private schools, except for some really elite ones.

However that being said, the government can mitigate some issues. At our current wealth level we should be winning at least 2-3 gold medals every olympics, but instead we are see-sawing between 0 and 1 since 2008.

Also football is the most popular sport all over the world. India is ranked 124 but Senegal ranks 19 despite being a poor country.

When will India reach the top 20 or 30 in FIFA rankings?
