Indian Air Force: News & Discussions

NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India will buy 156 combat helicopters for its air force and army in a deal worth over $7.3 billion, the defence ministry said on Friday, marking one of the biggest purchases this financial year in the country's drive to modernise its military.

The dual-engine 'Prachand' helicopter manufactured by Indian warplane maker Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd is powered by engines co-developed with France's Safran and can operate at an altitude of 5,000 metres and above.

India has been making efforts to boost its domestic defence production to achieve self-reliance and shield itself from disruptions in global supply chains after being the world's top arms importer for years, with Russia as its main supplier.

It's industry standard. You can't expect them to churn out next year right? Everything takes some X+3 or X+4 years.
Weren’t HAL expecting orders for some time now? Also HAL built LSP from own funds and pitched them to IAF and IA.
Tumkur facility was built expecting orders for LCH and Russian kamaov helicopters production ( before Covid and Ukraine war this deal was hot) after all these pre planning still they have to go for X+3 industry standard?

Before thinking about Country one has to think about himself. UN Generals were busy ordering yet to deliver 6 Apache helicopters.

LCH is the only effective weapon on LAC. UAV, Tanks, Artillery, Jets !! nothing will be as effective as LCH.
That’s inter service rivalry IAF and IA both contested for Apaches eventually IAF took it and IA had to throw the fist force MoD to get peace meal 6 apache orders.
Frankly attack helicopters should be with Army aviation but in India anything that flies IAF wants it under them including navy aviation 🤣
Bipin Rawat was so frustrated with IAF he called them supporting wing of army 😂
LCH army getting 90 and IAF 66.

HAL Tumkur helicopter facility is ready and lying idle still 3 years for first LCH to deliver?

D&D of EW Suite is underway. SAAB, Elbit, Hensoldt, and Elettronica SpA are the bidder for the same. Addtionally, HAL has a MoU with SAAB for LWS-310 system.
If D&D of the EW is underway , what's the connection with SAAB , Elbit , Hensoldt & Etettronica SpA bidding for the same ?

Or are we to understand DRDO has chosen F - OEMs as DcPP ? In addition to this we've information HAL has an MoU for LWS-310 early warning system .

Can someone make sense out of this tweet ?

- Saab has their own laser warning system. Perhaps DRDO is integrating that into the EW suite.
- Same for Hensoldt - they have apparently supplied us the obstacle avoidance systems
- As for Elettronica Aster.. seems like their role is much bigger, but IDK how it ties into the EW suite. Maybe they are pitching some key component.

Then pray what exactly is DRDO or HAL developing ? They're functioning more as system integrators .

I might be wrong but I think one of the issues regarding LCH was also the fact that did not come with any sort of EW suite at all(RWR, MAWS, ..)

@Azaad
Thanks for the comprehensive comments.

India has a procurement process designed to stop things being procured in a reasonable time. A long time ago an Indian on another forum once listed the 17 steps required to buy something. India has 31 fighter squadrons rather than the 42 sanctioned. Does it really need some committee to issue a Certificate of Necessity to get more fighters when it's blindingly obvious that India desperately needs more fighters?

It's beyond stupid how things are procured. If there is insufficient will to change the system, I would say side track the rules and fast track everything!

Sorry to disagree with you. It is limited money which prevents from speedy acquisitions. Otherwise, spend a lot money on military and become a pauper state like Pakistan with a begging bowl in hand and in front of IMF every six months.

With all the bureaucratic steps involved in Indian procurement I guess there is a built in delay of several years on procuring anything. India wants to buy a drone with 6 months from order to delivery? Would delivery take 2 years 6 months or 3 years 6 months or 4 years 6 months or... ?

Some updates from my side
