agree...we should hv long range BVR capability. i think we should add two R37 bvr missile in every su 30 mki. same with every tejas, we should add two sky sting BVR missile. rest BVR missiles should be indian BVR missiles. sky sting hv two seekers (IR nd RF), so they can detect enemy aircrafts etc by itself from some range. so tejas lesser range aesa radar missile guidance disadvantage can increased by skysting dual seekers.

R37 is not a good A2A missile . Buy the Israeli one if need be but not more Russian junk .

@Interested is correct, assuming an upgraded SU-30 MKI radar can detect 1m^2 RCS at 200 km then J-35 with assumed RCS of 0.05m^2 RCS will be detected at ~95 km by the same radar (~113km for 0.1m^2). There is a mathematical formula for this, you can use ChatGPT.

With just passive EW & RWR, J-35 will know where SU-30MKI is and can shoot first with PL-15s.

Rafale's OSF-IT might actually have a higher range (>125km) to detect J-35s if it knows where to look at that is where VHF radars come into picture.

Another challenge with stealth aircraft is maintaining track/lock at distance when guiding BVRs. Tactics for defending against <= 4.5 gen fighters can not be applied 1-to-1 for stealth fighters.

Your theory with mathematics that stealth fighter will detect first the 4.5 aircraft does not make sense. Review it again.

The PL-15 missile is a long range missile for distance. It is not a proximity missile for shorter distance when the stealth fighter comes in the vicinity. It is the short range missile with proximity fuse will destroy the stealth fighter first.

You are right that Rafale will shoot first. So will the Su-30Mki upgraded.

Its a generation gap between both platforms stealth shape bhi koi cheez hoti hai.
Think logically suni sunayi bato pe vishvas mat kro.

Does the surface size matter or the power of radar waves matter. The radar does not distinguish the size. The only thing matter is that how big is the detection size. You are right that metal surface detects easily.

In case of stealth which I do not believe that the Chinese have advanced enough to have surface coatings as good as F-22 or F-35. Chinese is all copy. When the Americans realized that they are copied, they put a stop and Chinese lost the surface copy technology.

Spectra is not some magic potion that will automatically make it invisible. Its no substitute for actual stealth.

Spectra (pretty much all EW) effectiveness depends upon updated threat libraries.

For a non-stealth fighter, it is a force multiplier that can even the scales a bit when facing fifth generation (at least gives a fighting chance to defend).

Now IAF has the data from that first engagement about PL-15E, HQ-9, HQ-16, sensors/platforms involved in their kill chain and any tactical innovation that PAF had up it's sleeve.

Turns out Govt wanted even WDB would be folded into MDL back in the day but the above guy, Parmanandan( a civilian btw, not Navy officer, core of the WDB when it started ) convinced Navy brass not to.

And the reason given by the guy is 100% bang on target and this discussion seems to be from the 70s

OTOH Airforce guys let their equivalent be folded into HAL/ADA

Two different but machine-heavy wings of the armed forces, two very different visions to build capability and two different results.

Our country is richer now, private industry is capable enough and DRDO type orgs have improved somewhat, there is still time for them to change and go all in for domestic fighter aircraft development to build our numbers

This only proves how visionary our naval organisation was . It's due to these esteemed people, we are building our own aircraft carriers, SSBNs, SSN along with plethora of surface combatants .

EW is a need in modern warfare.
But not an equivalent nor an alternative of radar stealth, unlike how the French market it.
