Indian Army Armored Vehicles

"Brother my BREN's firing pin has broken, do you have a spare?'
"Yes brother take my spare"
*hands over spares from a Negev 7 LMG
*BREN has been stripped clean in the middle of a firefight
"
Brother this is not the correct part"
"It has to be brother, I am the second LMG gunner"
*LN steps in to intervene
"Brothers, don't worry! Try mine, I am also using an LMG"
*hands over spares from an INSAS LMG

Who told Army to PR stuff on this level?
Go buy stuff anywhere around the world but such level of open PR and photo ops makes one blood boil.

Dont understand why everyone one is getting their panties in a bunch over a bunch of pictures

1. He is the COAS - he is on a diplomatic mission to a friendly nation
2. Friendly nation shows COAS a firing demo by one of their Divisions which includes Interaction with their C&C and demo of their weapon systems

Big fucking deal.

right now more than his Gandiva, this Arjun needs a better 'Saarathi' - that 1400 bhp engine is too burdened for him, so DRDO goys better finish that 1500 bhp local engine project ASAP
Engine is the least of it's problems. It needs a smooth-bore gun and better armor coverage on turret front. It needs blast doors for ammo stowage, it needs composite armor on that mantlet, it needs era panels covering the whole of each side of the turret, it needs era on the roof of the turret between the mantlet edge and the hatches, it needs hard kill APS for being this big of a target.

granted, yes, but it's also a thing that even original Mk1 design was meant with 1500 bhp Leopard 2's engine in mind, that didn't simply happen because US Embargo over its supplies that (then) West Germany had to follow...we eventually got 1400 bhp engine that was going to be put in some Leopard 1 upgraded prototype with a transmission that is said to be used in heavy trucks - so it was already underpowered a bit; and now with further weight on it in Mk1A design it's burdened further

and now same Germ-many is arm-twisting us with supplies of same engine 🤷‍♂️

if anything, that DATRAN 1500 bhp should be put in place of that german 1400 bhp thing first in good numbers; FMBT project is already going nowhere with not even first prototype out; but by times it happens we at least would have a mature engine for it with experiences from Arjun

alternatively I was even arguing in favour of putting HTSE-1200 that's got shaft horsepower of maximum 1600 some, with some configuration perhaps it could be used on Arjun line as well, like how Russians and Americans put turboshaft engines on their T-80 and Abrams line?

Picking an engine right now is a smaller issue than the gearbox. The DATRAN is being tested using the same Renk RK 304 epicylic semi automatic gearbox. You know what other tank is using this gearbox ? The M60 Patton.

The MTU 838 Ka-501 V-10 wasn't even rated to produce 1400bhp. We slapped bigger turbos and oversized fuel injectors into it and made it produce that power and let the rich fuel-air ratio sort itself out. Hence the horrible range on a full tank.

What we wanted for the Arjun was the Renk HSWL 295TM Automatic gearbox, which Germans wouldn't give us.

And after they refused the MTU MT883 V-12, we had two choices, ask the Koreans for a 838 derived engine which made little sense, or make our own. BTW the Germans saw no issues with supplying this 883 engine with the 295TM gearbox to the Turks, a budding defense export rival. They remain disdainful towards Indians as ever.

Now our engine will be ready, but I'm not sure about what will be done about the gearbox.

man...i knew basics that what we got in engine was not upto mark, but didn't know about we even got duped with gearbox 😪

perhaps they could gather guys from BEML Tata Mahindra Force Ashok Leyland Mahindra Eicher whoever the hell has experience with heavy machinery here to get a PROPER gearbox done as well ? 🤷‍♂️ it's not '80s anymore and we can crack something this time with things in hand...hopefully...
