Indian Economy

This is really bad. Physical mobility means dynamic economy. India's inability to create livable cities will bite in the ass, first with brain drain and now with this.

Problem is all our Tier 1 cities were getting choked due to poor infra expansion. Even I am getting frustated driving in my Main road which supposed to be an 4 lane road with footpath.

Instead it is 1.5 lanes at each end or 1 lane and everything is enchroached as fuck. Also the road is busy with company busses, college bus and choke a thon is real. I am in suburb of Chennai. Interior chennai is pain to drive.

Same scenario across cities.

My hometown is such a breeze. City wakes up by 6 am and sleeps by 10pm. Unfortunately very few big IT firms were moving. Exception is Zoho who wants to have offices in Tier 2 city for better opportunity to local surrounding region.

I'm not sure about Lava, weren't some of there directors or higher-ups arrested for helping chinks , although Gyan therapy doesn't come across as bikau as technical guruji. that incident could be a one off thing tho.

Lava does have some capacity to do their own OEM-style work BUT i still suspect most of their tech and machinery came from Chinese smartphone OEM guys only; rest i wasn't aware of their higher ups getting scrutinised over chinese links, but anyways an incident

so on teligram, there's a friend who's extremely vocal to chinese smartphones and insists that people should buy "Indian" (so called) smartphones instead, instead of sending your money to the chinese who'll eventually fund pakistanis against us in long run...

now i support this sentiment of not giving your money to your enemies, but... 🤷‍♂️ do we even have proper alternative at home?

during covid times and all that border skirmish between us and them, He was spamming about Micromax 'finally making an indian smartphone' and all, perhaps even got one, then when Lava started manufacturing their stuff he bought a Lava stuff too...
I casually inquired why did he ditch Micromax, his response was something in line 'lack of updates' lol
then the Lava model he posted, i just ran reverse google image search to find out that it too was some OEM-ish model by some lesser known chinese manufacturer that they eventually released here - i'm not expert but smartphone chips have some close relation between the chipset used and camera modules used...using those names or numbers one can easily reverse search the origins and often you'll find above 90 percent stuff by these 'Indian' smartphone 'manufacturers' is rebranded maal even in this date 🤷‍♂️

They have some inhouse research for Their stuff, coming to your second point , phone designing is a more of a product design thing than engineering thing, india doesn't have whole alot of people skilled in product designing, they might be using some chinese design firm.

instead of chinese prefer samsung, google, apple etc....for cheaper phones prefer samsung nd lava phones. a indian manufacturer with rebranded maal is far better (not saying in quality, feature etc) than chinese companies phones.

As a % of the population is a better indicator though is it not. Having a 10% population enjoying a very good lifestyle is not ideal
I'm more than glad that more people aren't using CRED, is a shit service that sells your data, and uses asshole tactics to get users engaged , they're yet to turn profits, its more marketing than substance. although your points are mostly correct, our people need more disposable income , raw population number isn't that good of a metric .

Saharsa Junction now looks more like an airport, Saharsa is a small town in Bihar.

Patna, Gaya, and Muzaffarpur railway stations are currently under construction and, once completed, will look even better than many airports in India.

The saharsa station have a very bad design. The central area when entering have lot of pillars. Like you can see 3-4 rows creating 3 entrance, with middle one having the Information board.

Extremely poor design. Ideally it should be giant hall with with two openings for entry and exit. Basically, when you try to enter the board is not properly visible.

Other than that, much improved work in terms of other utilities. Hope it will have enough seating arrangement. SMVT simply forgot to have seats. Maintenance is crucial.

You need multiple exits to avoid it becoming a death trap during a commotion or room emptying event.

It does not have any exit. You have set of pillars opening to platform. No Indian stations in Broad Gauge do not have the concept of entry and exit. It is always free entry when you have gaps in compounds.

These entry/exit were only implemented properly in Metro stations.

Yup but it's better than before where only 1% of population was enjoying better life. Now atleast we have a middle class.
If we can keep up economic reforms we shall have 30% population in that bracket within 15-20 years.

The major issue is that building liveable cities is primarily the responsibility of state and local governments. When even the bureaucrats at central level are unimaginative, corrupt and non-efficient, you can very well think their level at local and state levels.

This thing should have been tackled and streamlined in the 1990s when we had started to grow. Zoning should have been implemented, roads should have been broadened with future capacity in mind, intensively laying sewage and electricity infrastructure in planned way, construction of footpaths etc. We just don't have visionary and forward thinking bureaucracy.

For god knows why, we still don't encourage vertical growth in cities, even in areas not earthquake prone. Most cities have unnecessary limit on vertical building heights. This led to horizontal expansion of cities, engulfing agricultural areas in itself. These farmlands were sold by owners and used to build houses, which created another haphazard mess. These plots don't even have road access and if they do, it is usually 6-10 feet broad.

Let me show you about Patna through images :

This is the part built by British, now the power centre of the state :

You can see the grid like structure and planning.

Now this is the recent expansion of the city in last 30 years :

Screenshot 2025-02-23 at 12.41.26 PM.webp

No grids, no plans and nothing. No provision for parks or any public space. Just houses built haphazardly along roads carved out from no where.

Now the city is still expanding horizontally, and this is one of such areas :

You see? The future is same as the 2nd image.

I think this problem is beyond our hand in a democratic system though. I mean what options do we have? Are we going to rebuild these areas? If so, with what money? Moreover, it is impossible to destroy people's homes for such rebuild in first place. That is impossible to do politically and judicially in our system. Heck, we can't even demolish encroachments easily.

In an ideal world, every urban planning bureaucrat in India since 1990s should face charges for gross negligence of duties and their pension / benefits stopped.

As for solutions, I think our focus should be on beautifying such areas and cleaning them. But alas, we all know the civic sense of people. They are the first ones to make places dirty. Anyway, this should be our vision for them :

Encroachments should be razed, lay proper sewage, build good quality roads, proper laying of electric wires, clean the areas etc etc. But we know, nothing is going to change.

Redevelopment means getting the land first and planning an win-win solution for all parties. But problem are few.

1. People were afraid they will be thrown out after redevelopment.
2. Politician creep into project.
3. Illogical plans.

Some sort of agreement should be reached with owners and redevelopers. Like owners gain extra property, leasing, got hands to have commercial space for rent. We should make it attractable to gain the advantage of redevelopment.
