Indian Nuclear Energy Programme

Do we have enough of our own domestic supply of uranium fuel to support this kind of expansion?
No. That's why the Thorium Cycle Plan. I don't know where they could get all the Uranium for this. Kazakhstan? Australia? I heard there is lot of Uranium in Oceans. How about that?

Man, India developed Nuclear Technologies earlier than other players and had lead time like 30-years. Now, those very same players late in game constructing Nuclear Power Plants elsewhere bringing in revenue. Gormint run Companies are a curse. If whatever that R&D capital is allocated to conglomerates, then we would had started third phase by now.

Dr. A. K. Mohanty, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission (AEC)& Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) inaugurated Electronics Grade Boron-11 (B11) Enrichment Facility at Heavy Water Board Facilities (HWBF), Talcher on October 23, 2024. With technology demonstration of B11 enrichment to electronics grade (>99.8%) at HWBF, Talcher, now India has joined the elite club of nations who are having this technology and it is a significant step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat. Electronics grade B11 is used for production of BF3 gas which is used as p-type dopant in the manufacturing of semiconductor chips.

HWBF, Talcher, which is sub-unit of Heavy Water Board, Mumbai under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, is pioneer in the field of production of various specialty materials for nuclear as well as non-nuclear applications. The unit is involvedin the production of nuclear control rod grade (> 67% IP ) and neutron detector grade(>96% IP) of Boron-10 (B10) isotopes. These B10enriched products are essential for 3-stage nuclear power programme. HWBF, Talcher also produces different organophosporous solvents used in front end and back end of nuclear fuel cycle.

"The standard 220 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR), which has a proven safety and performance record, is being upgraded to reduce the land requirement and make it deployable close to the industries for use as a captive power plant. These reactors, termed as Bharat Small Reactors (BSR) are planned to address the decarbonisation needs of industries like steel, aluminium, metals etc. Setting up of 220 MW Bharat Small Reactors is envisaged within the existing legal framework, broadly envisaging provision of land, cooling water and capital by the private entity, with the design, quality assurance and operation & maintenance by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), based
on agreed business models," he said.

"BARC is developing Small Modular Reactor for repurposing of retiring coal-based power plants and catering to power requirements at remote locations in the country."
