LCA TEJAS MK-I & MK-IA: News and Discussion

GE could start delivering engines tomorrow but then the Air Marshals will put out some more systems and weapons to be integrated, moon and mars trials and tests to be done etc

Then complain Tejas delivery is delayed, declining squadron nos, emergency procoor F16 or Rafale saar

Based on information regarding the status of the Tejas MK1A, the following can be discerned :

1) GE is producing the GE F-404 IN20 engine (84.5 KN) once again at their Massachusetts facility and supply line issues seem to have been resolved.

2) While the first engine is to be rolled out, US has offered to supply GE F-404 102/103 (78.9 KN) as a stopgap measure which is exactly what HAL intends to use to deliver the first examples to IAF.

3) After the news of engine supply resumption, IAF is seen as more willing to proceed with the 97 follow on orders for the Tejas MK1A and has sent the RFP to HAL for the same.

IMO the reason GE isn't committing to a firm delivery date & quantities is coz the same line also caters to RoK ( although RoK has its own assembly line , certain parts are sourced from GE ) apart from the trainer jet program for the USAF IIRC which is due to go online shortly.

On their list of priorities we come last . Unless they haven't communicated a firm delivery time schedule to the other two & gotten them on board they won't commit anything to us . What's more we're aware of this discriminatory treatment but can't do much about it .

Rest assured GE has the capacity to make up for the delays in delivery but the crux of the issue is the time it'd take. We can't have a situation where in the first two years beginning today (of whatever is left in this FY) they deliver 10-12 & dump 30 odd nos in the 3rd year which is a likely scenario . No clue how prepared HAL is to deal with it.

This line was restarted recently and was closed for several years.

The ROK produces its own GE F404 engines.

For the long term wee should aggressively develop the Kaveri engine (Dry Engine - Godrej and Afterburner - BrahMos) which we are doing at the moment.

It assembles the F-404 TF & produces few parts . Critical components are sourced from GE. Long short story - it's somewhat similar to the agreement we'd be signing with GE for the assembly of the F-414 TF with mfg of MOST of the parts done locally out here except for a few critical components .

Hence in this respect our agreement with GE has more depth to it unlike the agreement GE signed with RoK.

A Tejas meeting IAF specification would have come 25+ years late if it had been delivered by April 2024. This talk of scrapping the programme because it looks to be delayed for another 6 months or a year is ridiculous to me.

Talking about Kaveri progressing well in relation to Tejas, when is it due to be certified? How long after that to be in production? How long after that to be fitted to production Tejas?

If they're planning on shutting down F404 lines then we might as well get a ToT for it like we did for RD-33 & AL-31FP.
