There are clearly a lot of people who are soft seperatists. Actually, it has improved a lot recently. I have been seeing "Nationalist" Assamese for a few years now. When I used to live there, I have never met any Assamese who would condemn or criticise what the ULFA did. Perhaps only a few whose kin died due to the barbaric activities of the ULFA. Many would even go as far as to deny what they did and say there were protecting assam and Assamese culture from the "outsiders"/"Hindi speaking people"/"Indians", etc.
It's a lot better now, but I also think it's due to the extreme influx of kanglus into Assam, that many have united with others to resist the green invasion. I hope it's not true, but I think if kanglu invasion is stopped, we might once again reach point 0, where the different groups there once again start inflighting and turn on the "mainlanders" and the other supposed "outsiders". So, sometimes I even think perhaps it's necessary to maintain a steady and controlled influx of "others" (kanglus), so that there is a common outlet to hate, and the internal conflicts remain in truce. But, the influx must also be controlled, to prevent the hijacking of the system due to the demographic change. Maybe this is why the government isn't cracking down hard on the illegal immigrants. Who knows?
