Because Rafale was in the same league than Mig29/35 for MMRCA, and the russian jet didn't satisfied to tests (and the russian support was found bad).
Su57 can't be compared to Rafale. Su57 is a natural successor to Su30.

When IAF evaluated fighters for MMRCA only euro fighter and Rafale qualified. IAF wasn’t satisfied with Mig29/35 because of the engine issue which plagued MiG 29 back then also Rafale had no BVR capabilities when MMRCA was going on till 2012. Rafale was chosen because of single vendor and euro fighter was of whole Europe and any country can withheld future support if diplomatic relations goes wrong. Even now IAF will choose more Rafale squadrons if Govt opens up the purse no doubt about capabilities of Rafales. Most loved fighter in IAF inventory is mirage 2000 and now it’s Rafale.
It’s the French govt/Dassault who tries to exploit after sales by not fulfilling offset clauses and asking exorbitant amount to integrate Indian weapons despite paying upfront for Indian specific modifications. They have done with Mirage upgrades as well and now continuing with Rafale. On naval front we all know what happened with scorpene subs tot/offset and extra 3 subs AIP integration price is also being negotiated so the delay in signing the deal.

Why did you not ink a Mirage 2000-5 deal, with the assembly line 20 years ago?
Why did HAL was so unworkable it was impossible to work with on MMRCA1 ?
Why did you wait so many time to order a second batch, after all the others put firm orders ?

And if you don't want the french jets, order some J-10. I'm sure they are on stock and so affordable.

Main issue with the French jets & ammunations is that they are very expensive (more so during conflict) and they wont provide as much tech transfer as Russia does for their top of the line products. Other, France is a reliable partner and well respected in India.

Here's the thing, you need to treat weapon systems like a strategic asset, meaning rules and regulations for them must be different. Current upsc infested babudom treats weapons like issuing tender for plastic chairs in their office.

Majority of the anger towards Dassualt and French isn't about equipment being pricey, its extortion after the deal was locked on, just like Scorpene or Mirage 2000. If your lot has honestly said that we are gonna charge Morbillion Dollars later for some upgrades or repair, and still IAF decides to do randirona then we can blame them.

By the way, has Dassault fulfilled all offsets of Rafale deal?

I mean Amerishart gear is superior in quality, but it is only French and Russian platforms that can be used to do their job in a war, the compulsion to buy French or Russian is more political and logistics related than how good some US wunderwaffe and it's munitions are.

You never have knives out for Boeing/US over this by the dalals.

Methinks Amerisharts are not supplying spares so IAF is using some deshi jugaadu parts which is causing problems.

It would track with how the Army Apache order has been indefinitely delayed because muh supply chain

There was an issue with Apaches in USAF inventory and they grounded the fleet to rectify the issue and I reckon they sold the same to us and we haven’t asked them to rectify the same fault. Even American chinooks were grounded due to faults.

MoD/GoI babus if they had a vision would have made dedicated attack helicopter program by now for our specific needs rather than relying on amerisharts. But perhaps all this atmanirbharata stuff is just pep talk. HCH version of Prachand could have been a reality by now..

We can also make a low altitude specific varient with more armour.
If we can afford to spend 4 billion for 22 apache, we can sure as hell afford to create this varient of lch.

I hate to say this and this might get on nerve of some people but some of the IAF chaps are also import lover like IA chaps. They will unquestionably put their money on imports but will have 10-20x questions if there is a problem in our own stuff. Foreign maal is never subjected to question unless it's some old junk like that flying coffin mig-21.

28 apache with their "longbow" radar were supposed be kind of like attack helicopter version of awacs( tho a lot lower range, 16km for target detection, but again helis fly a lot lower too.)
Providing targeting data to other attack helis like prachand and Rudra.

The thing is babus didn't think of developing similar radar for prachand, but were ready to buy 22 apache for 4billion dollars.

Army Apache order is definitely Jaziya paid to Uncle Sam.
Maybe even the Airforce order was.
