Pakistani Leaders’ Deception Fuels Public Despair Over Progress in India
The Pakistani public is being kept poorly informed about India’s economic progress, including developments in Kashmir. Instead, they are fed a narrative that paints India as a nation on the verge of collapse. Many are led to believe that it is Pakistan’s Islamist forces that will eventually march to Delhi, restore order, and save India’s Muslim population from extinction. This rhetoric often references the history of Muslim invasions of India, particularly the 700-year-long dominance starting in the 11th century.
Here’s what the Pakistani media propagates to its citizens:
1. Muslims in India are under threat and need to be “saved” by Pakistan.
2. Muslims in Kashmir face extinction, and Pakistan must “reclaim” the region from India.
3. India’s poverty is so extreme that, according to them, hundreds of thousands of people die daily in the streets.
4. Pakistan’s intervention will spark Muslim solidarity across India, uniting the Muslim population against Indian authorities.
But a Different Reality: Contrasting Narratives
Some young, independent Pakistani journalists are beginning to challenge this propaganda. Armed with microphones, recorders, and smartphones, they take to the streets to show ordinary citizens the reality of today’s India. The reactions they capture reveal a stark contrast between perception and reality:
A. India and its Development
When shown videos of India’s thriving cities, many Pakistanis initially refuse to believe it’s India. They assume the images are from countries like China, Japan, or Singapore. Upon learning the truth, they are left in disbelief.
B. Reports from Returning Visitors
Muslims visiting relatives and friends in India often return to Pakistan with glowing accounts of Indian prosperity, including the improved condition of Muslims. However, these stories are dismissed by skeptics. Some Muslims who migrated to Pakistan during Partition in 1947 now regret their decision, though it’s too late to reverse.
C. The Kashmir Reality
Despite Pakistan’s persistent rhetoric on Kashmir, the reality is that people on the Indian side of Kashmir enjoy greater prosperity and happiness. Many living in Pakistan-administered Kashmir reportedly wish they could join India, and there’s speculation that an economic rebellion in the region could one day lead to reunification with India.
D. India’s Middle-Class Boom
India’s burgeoning middle class is a source of envy for many Pakistanis. The sheer size of this group has drawn the attention of global powers, eager to tap into its economic potential. India boasts superior cars, housing, and public transportation systems—dreams that feel unattainable for most Pakistanis. This disparity has fueled discontent, with many blaming their own leaders for Pakistan’s shortcomings. Interestingly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has gained unexpected popularity in Pakistan, symbolizing progress and prosperity.
Growing Economic Disparity
The widening economic gap between India and Pakistan is becoming increasingly difficult for Pakistanis to ignore. Many are frustrated with their country’s stagnant development and incompetent leadership. If given the chance, they would likely reject both their rulers and the Islamist propaganda that has kept them misinformed for decades.
