Indian Air Force: News & Discussions

These kind of reactive purchases should be avoided. Another PGM we are trying to procure, when we have all components to build an PGM. CATS Hunter without an Swarm capability is basically similar to the Rafael Ice breaker. DRDO have all relevant things like Seeker tech, Propulsion combination and even an Engine in the form of PTAE-7. If required it is easy to build these kind of PGMs.

Maybe because of this. I mean BDL is going to locally manufacture those.

Again, we are in the situation where license manufacturing does not make sense. BDL will procure everything from Rafael specified vendors. On the other hand, our own development of seekers will not be used and lies with DRDO itself for unforeseen time.

Imports have to be accomodated along domestic development , not for any strategic reason but rather for various other reasons , which I dont know .
Most probably being, " we will only buy your stuff, unless you allow us to import also".
This being a time of slow burning conflict, government can't put its foot down ( it's not that they done so ever in peace time ) on the issue of importation of weapons.
Make in india is fulfilled, BDL gets orders, IAF happy, BDL happy, jooz happy .
Let them be happy for this thing

It's great to manufacture with tot as well to sell it to nato and israel. Its a 5th gen weapon for both land and sea.

I love the name ice breaker, as if india and pakistan are in a romantic relationship and india needs an ICE breaker to initiate a conversation after a fight .lol
Who names these things yaar, also that LORA missile.
Icebreaker should be launched first, after that LORA should be launched.
The LORA will then be stuck in Imran's!

Finish it all off with penetration cum blast rounds from Arjun.

If IAF is buying this with any form of urgency, they may have identified something in the recent skirmish where this would be useful and aren't waiting for a domestic alternative to form up.

Or a way to thank Israel for their overt and steadfast support!

Indonesia’s fighter jet acquisition program is starting to resemble India’s MRFA saga — dragging on for decades without a deal ever being signed.
sure NO.
-42 Rafale firmly ordered (ie with a 15% account wired to Rafale international members).
-First delivery next year.

Nothing to compare to India.

India talked to SAFRAN about it, negotiated with SAFRAN about it but could not agree on terms (i guess).

It is worth remembering a famous saying, often attributed to Einstein:

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting to get different results
The same was made with GE, PW, R&R..... with same results.

If you want to purchase a brand new Ferrari with only the money for the 4 wheels, same result will occur with Porsch, BMW, Mercedes, McLaren.....

They should be pragmatic about other things as well.

True incident ..10-12 years back I was travelling and the same airport was used as both Military/ Civilian AF..I saw our premier frontline in open / hangers and even a guy sitting next to me was recording it. He was told by Air hostess to delete the recordings.. Now imagine if someone has sent these images to other side of the border..

Pathankot attack is also example of civilian houses very close to strategic airbases

There is no way you can convince our Milords and babus to take action unless some disaster has taken place . IAF think tank can do very little here ..

Use electric fencing, keep aircraft covers in shelters even in peace time.
That's all we can do

Oh how unfortunate of you to term a deliberate and cautious approach as some sort of insanity, its a rather appalling conclusion to arrive at .
You have passed your imprudent judgement on the state of affairs with regards to acquisition of aeronautical engines, so as to use in India's fighter jet programme , rather prematurely.
The officials in the Ministry of defence, ofcourse after consulting the relevant stakeholders of whom there are many, shall arrive at a wise and informed decision.
None of the above processes are in any manner an indictment of an unsteady procedural policy with regards to acquisition of aforementioned item, and the same can be substantiated by any official information in regards to this issue , which always clarifies the current status on the execution of this particular agenda !
Press stories ,my friend are there to kill the excitement of amateurs like us, who are mere humble mortals with no influence on the course of events, which shall transpire.
Let the esteemed officials, take an informed decision after very thorough deliberations within a broad scope of relevant references and with the concerned bodies of government and one which shall be acceptable to all those who may be affected either positively or negatively,by the pursuit of a particular policy path in this regard .
Indian defence policy has always strived for swift disposal of defence related issues, although such an approach may seem counterproductive and even ambivalent to many observers, but one cannot expect a bureaucracy such as India's to cast caution down the wind , just so it may meet a deadline , without considering every available option thoroughly and carefully .

Correction in the above reply .
Kindly consider the omission of the the word " THEM" between use and in in the above reply.
" You have passed your imprudent judgement on the state of affairs with regards to the acquisition of aeronautical engine , so as to use ( them )in our fighter jet programme "
This omission is profoundly regretted.

You are talking about Dual purpose Airports. We have lot of them, Pune airport is one thing. Gorakhphur airport is dual purpose, Tezpur, Pasighat were all forward airports where video, photos were discouraged by the Airport staffs.

Also, I am more worried about lack of sufficient hard shelters for the Transport fleet. We need to build this for lot our Air bases.

I as a pucca troll ,must frame a suitable answer to one of the most commonly asked questions " why is the indian defence ministry slow ?" Many of such questions like the aforementioned one are soaked in a generalised preconceived opinion, which is often negative with regards to our defence acquisition policy !
Our defence acquisition policy which is one of the most comprehensive in the world, selects an item after considering its suitability with regards to various parameters of an extremely rigorous field evaluation process , which is invariably conducted by the concerned branch of our Armed forces
The defence ministry has never under any circumstances indulged itself in a pursuit of any other penultimate objective other than striving to provide for our distinguished armed forces, such arms which are the creme de la creme in thier category.
And which qualify as the least priced but yet they are the best in their category.
After all, even defence ministry has to keep itself abreast with much cherished norms of fiscal prudence which is vogue nowadays.
Yet ,as philistine as the defence ministry has been called, it cannot expedite any aspect of acquisition process, for it has to plug all gaps and finally with the consent of the branch of the armed forces concerned sign the final agreement for procurement of required items , after all the relevant departmental clearances given in a particular process .the deal thus signed not only satisfies the need of the military but also meets each and every legal guideline so as to rule out any such unforseen impediments in the induction of the concerned system by the concerned branch of armed forces so that no one can find anything which warrants a revaluation of the whole acquisition procedure in a particular acquisition agenda , and thus if it is examined by any of the neutral audit bodies , authorised by the Government of India, no discrepancy is found at any stage of the proces .
The defence ministry works day and night, to enable the military have best of the equipment ( and which meets the lowest bidder criterion) and to enable the minister to answer questions in the parliament with truth and confidence ( not confidentiality ) and due the aforementioned rigorous and thorough execution of all projects the opposition never has any actual substantive proof ( barring false and manufactured proofs of which of which there is a no dearth of sadly ) , about any untoward deviation from rules of acquisition in any particular acquisition agenda , so as to extend any undue advantage to any particular bidder , in relation to procurement of an item and thus keeping other bidders at an disadvantageous position!
I just wish to say that defence ministry officials are not " mentally challenged" by any standard whatsoever .
It's absolutely false and incredulous to even suggest that .

@Hari Sud do read it .
Ignore the first three words.
