Vanishing Poverty in India

For the last 75 years, poverty in India was a favorite catchphrase of Western media and leaders. However, this characterization no longer holds as India is transitioning out of poverty through economic progress, improved education, and a more equitable distribution of opportunities that empower the masses. Western statisticians had estimated that India’s poverty rate was 70% in 1947, but by 2023, this figure had dropped to just 5%, although the population has grown three fold.

Poverty is defined as the lack of sufficient material possessions or income to meet basic needs. It encompasses social, economic, and political dimensions. Absolute poverty is the complete lack of the means necessary to meet fundamental personal needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter. In India, under its unique social, cultural, and economic conditions, poverty is defined by a monthly income of ₹1,286 for urban areas and ₹1,059.42 for rural areas, aligning with the World Bank's poverty line of $2.15 per day.

So, what do the statistics say about India, today?

According to the Brookings Institution, extreme poverty in India has effectively ended. Nearly 250 million people have been lifted out of multidimensional poverty in the last five years, a monumental achievement. However, poverty has not been entirely eradicated. In 2022, an estimated 38 million men and 45 million women still lived in poverty. The most concerning statistic is that 13 million children aged 10 to 14 were affected by poverty in the same year. It is still an unfinished task requiring hard work.

What has driven this remarkable improvement beyond political rhetoric?

During the 78th UN General Assembly meeting, President Dennis Francis highlighted that 800 million people in India have been lifted out of poverty, largely due to digitization and smartphone access in last 15 years. He was correct; today 940 million people in India use broadband, and 530 million people have bank accounts—a significant achievement in a country where financial inclusion and extensive digitization which was once a challenge, is very common today.

Additionally, the free ration entitlement, which provides 5 kg of food grain per person per month to 67% of the population, has nearly eradicated hunger, though exceptions remain.

Government efforts to improve citizens' lives deserve recognition, especially given the significant reduction in poverty to a single-digit figure, estimated to be around 5% or less. This achievement is a source of national pride. In contrast, according to the World Bank, Pakistan is expected to maintain a poverty rate of 40% through FY24–26 (Mettis Global Link, April 2, 2024).

This shift in India has led to a growing lower middle class, with many now transitioning into the upper middle class—a development that has attracted the attention of merchants and exporters of goods and services to India. The upper middle class, with an income bracket of ₹15 to ₹50 million per year, now has sufficient disposable income to purchase a wide range of products offered by Western merchants. As a result, the once-common catchphrase of "poor India" is gradually disappearing in the West.
