With Donald Trump back in office, U.S. foreign policy has taken a blunt turn: comply with American demands—or face tariffs, and in extreme cases, B2 bombers with bunker buster bombs are waiting. That’s the new mantra now.
Canada and Mexico, deeply tied to the U.S. economy, are resisting but have few alternatives. Both will likely yield under pressure. Europe, despite its posturing, remains constrained. With 35 countries bound together trying to find one voice and wary of Russian aggression, they’ll end up spending more on defence and buying more U.S. goods as America scales back its military presence.

China, having once exposed America’s dependence on rare earths, is unlikely to bend. While token concessions may come, re-shoring manufacturing back to America won’t undo decades of outsourcing. The best the U.S. can do is diversify imports—a process that may take a decade. Wary American are too comfortable with China’s supply and refuse to look elsewhere. That is a big American dilemma.

India is standing firm. Furious over U.S. outreach to Pakistan without curbing its jihadi elements, will refuse to sign the free trade deal and is prepared to endure 26% tariffs. In doing so, the U.S. may have lost a staunch ally. Also America won’t be able to sell more to India. Other big exporters to America like Japan, South Korea etc. have no independent view of their own. They will fall in line.
As for smaller nations—they’ll fall in line once the larger ones are forced to. They have no disputes worth a name with America to pick up a fight. If they do pick a fight then the B2s await their orders.
