India at Olympics

He is 178cm close to 180!
And remember he is 40now and he started way back in 2002-04.

He had injuries in 2004 and crashed out early in 2004 Olympics and went on to win Gold in 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Multiple Chinese players were already 178-180 during time when Lin Dan started.

Sen is 180 cm man. Let him build his game as he is still 22 years and many years to come. It is same as writing off Virat Kohli after 2014 England series, but the guy single handedly become the highest run scorer in the same English conditions 4 years down.

Bhai kis angle se 180cm dikh raha hai.

Many portals have wrongly mentioned his height as 180cm or 5'11"

He is only 5'9" Maybe a cm more or less.

In Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar also made huge runs with 5'5" height.

These are not even comparable sports.

So height is never an problem for this guys, Since shorter cricketers may struggle against bouncers but still these two scored truck loads of runs against some of the best attacks at that time.

Good players will evolve based on their limitations. We cannot throw out an player because he is not 6 ft.

I can't argue more if you keep on comparing apple with oranges.

Keep on struggling Olympic after Olympics brother!

The suggestion looks ridiculous when we want players with certain height, weight to achieve medals. We are concentrating on 16 sports and came 4th in archery, shooting, Badminton Men (First time an Indian reach SF in Olympics), TT QFs (first time we reached RO16,QF in our history), we barely missed an 4th in Skeet which is never an strong forte. Our Hockey entering Semifinals for the Second time in the row. We lost boxing due to bad rulings and an unfortunate incident ends Nisha's hope.

You guys are talking like we are bagging dozens of medals in Olympics. We went medal less from 1984 Olympics to 1996 Olympics when Paes win that Tennis bronze.

96 - 1 B
00 - 1 B
04 - 1 S
08 - 1 G, 2 B (T-3)
12 - 2 S, 4 B (T-6)
16 - 1 S, 1 B (T-2)
20 - 1 G, 2 S, 4 B (T-7)
24* - 3 B (T-3)*

We still have medal opportunities in Javelin, Hockey, TT bronze.

It will take another decade to get double digit results.

Deepika's abbu is right, spitting faxx.

Re height, you actually have to be good at the game first and havethe skills. It's not one of those sports where height is critical. Fitness and physicality, mental toughness come later.

Even in tennis when you get beyond 6'3" it becomes a liability.

How many of Indians and PIOs have started to feel overall low confidence in all things around us since June 4th? Before people start stating that India won the world cup cricket and all.. How confident were we by the way when Hardik's 1st ball touched the sky before SKY caught it.. bal bal bach gaye..

Going by the all the results, I feel as a nation/identity we are very low in self esteem and confidence recently.

What many nibbas have been saying here is true. Our archers were not really serious about the whole thing apparently. The willingness to learn and improve is totally lacking. We need a paradigm shift.

""The seniors choose the coaches, who are not actually coaches but just people who carry water and kit for them" says one archery insider. "The seniors don't want to change, they feel they have achieved World Cups through their own efforts and there is a lot of resistance in the camps."

When foreign coaches are brought in, says another, "the seniors gang up against coaches who will push them and demand more." Should the coach try and make technical corrections working with the juniors, the seniors then complain that their technique is being spoiled and their scores going down. "They make it difficult", the source said, "for either new technical coaches to come in or for new coaches to be developed." The juniors then follow the same culture, which permeates down through the camps."

The socio-economic situation of India in the 80's and 90's was vastly different from today.

Today there is state-of-the-art technology, decent infrastructure, physios, analysts, and nutritionists at our disposal.

This is why there can be no justification for such a poor show, especially when countries across the globe, rich and poor, failed or prosperous are winning medals.

Only in last decade we are putting effort and we are coming near close. But as PP and Parth Jindal mentioned our players simply lack the ability to step up in an Big match. Once things went down we are drooping our shoulders and accept our fate.

To give some more context, Lakshya has trained in Prakash Padukone's academy since he was kid, and apparently Padukone thought very highly of him since he was kid. So this is frustration of a coach who has trained him since kid and knows he is destined to achieve bigger things

Everyone knows what happened during that time.

That time our Govt were not bothered at all and did minimum expenditure. But now we are supporting our players and spending fortunes on them.

We are a nation of low Self Esteem because we see this mediocre performance everywhere right from our birth!

You have to find the optimum balance between Height and physique and having talent. Any mismatch will wear out the players much faster than their peers around the world.

Asians and Many Europeans retain their peak till early 30s in many sports. However Indian players are already out of their prime by 26-28 year of age.

How much pay do Athletes get for medals around the world.

US which is the no.1 ranked country in number of medals right now gives $37500.00 for a gold medal , which comes around 32lakhs INR .

Compare that to India, Neeraj Chopra first Indian individual gold medalist got almost 13cr. From various governments and institutions.

So motivation in terms of monetary benefits is definitely there for our athletes to succeed at the Olympics.
