Electronics and Semiconductor Manufacturing Industry

It is stupidity to have semiconductor fab or testing facility in Bengal. It is a border state, highly unstable with criminal goons running it's politics since last 50 years. Those criminal goons will not allow the fab to function. Stop having wild fantasies for heavens sake. Be reasonable.
Disagree.

Bangladeshi has no significance in running kolkata.
Premier Institution operate out of Bengal without any issue, FAB won't be any different.

Yeah when the real fun starts you can see for yourself what happens to institutions like GRSE & the very peaceful areas surrounding it . For perspective check what was the situation like during partition in those areas

Looks like the news of the plant being set up in Kolkata/WB was untrue.

Official release says Kolkata has got GlobalFoundries R&D centre, not fab.

Why does it all look like Smoke& Mirrors? Its looks like Carrot they dangle often to other countries but never leaves the hook.
Because it is like most of things agreed upon in DTTI. Good for making a vist look success but short on any benefits other than for US who can farm our beurocrats.

They should announce once construction begins. USA has invested very little in India compared to Vietnam or indonesia. Micron (with 70% indian funding), and first solar are the only big ones recently. Jabil and Corning are also there, but they are not a gamechanger

Better to have it there, gives a pretext for intervention

The investment pouring into those countries are nothing but sweatshops with minimal value addition. What we need are investments in high-tech, high-value industries, not more sweatshop operations. The narrative that "we'll focus on R&D once we're rich from sweatshop labor" is a trap – it's just an excuse to keep lagging behind.

Contrary to the popular narratives, most High Technology American Companies like Boeing sources parts from Indian vendors unlike Europoor Ma&gots who doesn't invest a dime in India. The future lies in high-technology sectors that drive real value, not in perpetuating low-skill, low-wage labor models. The focus should be on bringing in companies that invest in cutting-edge innovation, R&D, and high-value manufacturing.

By that logic Odisha is also pro to Cyclones in the coastal areas while Naxal movement in its Western part of the state, Chandigarh which has India's only integrated fab lab SCL under Govt of India is also under danger by Khalistanis or the one announced in Assam by Tata is also under danger since it can be attacked by China, Militancy etc... GRSE is protected by CISF as well as the Navy ..and the area always has been a peaceful dominated area..the company Global Foundries has recently acquired a company named Tagore Technologies which does GaN Semiconductor Chip Design...as of now it is a Fabless Design Company whether there is a Fab Plant that remains to be seen..but most probably its going to be a small one nothing big like the ones in Noida, GJ or in the South

Places like Haldia or south bengal are very good for Semiconductor manufacturing because of good water facilities and Kolkata being just 100 km away

Remember suspicious fire in SCL in 90s burned down wxpensive equipment setting back India by many decades? Bengal is on tenterhooks right now. I wish punjab and bengal get priorities sorted so they dont miss the growth story of India.

Whole of Taiwan is typhoon country by an extension of that logic yet the Chandipur & Kalam test ranges are there in Odisha & when was the last time you heard of a Maoist operation in Odisha ? SCL has long ceased to be the nucleus of India's SMC story since the fire out there in the late 1980s IIRC.

An ATMP is what's proposed in Assam not a fab.

SCL is still running and supplying Fab Chips to the Govt of India especially ISRO etc. Yes it is not the newage technology but there is still a talent of skilled workers there who know how to operate Lithography machines, do testing and designing of VLSI Chips etc. Chandigarh is not in Punjab its a UT shared by both Punjab and Haryana. In ideal situation the Govt should have invited more pvt players and investments there which would have made the local youth population be employed and stay in the area instead of doing Donkey Route to US and Canada. It started in Punjab now even Haryana is following suit. If Punjab govt is not serious then you give it to Haryana Govt who can establish such fab plants in Panchkula Industrial area, on the foothill of Himalaya, not far from NCR as well as away from Al-Bakistan border.
Coming to the one in Bengal, there is a local company named Tagore Tech founded by IIT-Kgp Alumni which has R&D Centers in Illinois and Kolkata..this fabless company got acquired by Global Foundries..for their GaN Chip Patents and technology. It is prolly going to be R&D center where lot of Design and Testing work will be done right now it employing 1000 people. Not sure if a Fab Plant will be establish as there is a confusion. The company GF says they have no intend of opening a Fab Plant there but then the Govt is saying about establishing a Fab Plant 'Shakti' in Kolkata

Thanks for the information but what exactly has this to do with the original line of argument about there being better places than WB for the location of this fab ?

For starters this isn't your normal commercial fab which itself would be a high security area but it's a military grade lab where not only vital components for India but the US & the west will be fabricated here meaning the security would have to what it is in a N plant complex or any other top secret site .

Besides according to the co founder the location is still undecided .

However, the collaboration still has a few things to clarify such as where will the project come up, what will be the financial investments, and what capacity of production is expected.

Btw the Shakti lab has nothing to do with Global Foundries . Here the firm involved is 3rdiTECH - a recent start up which has rapidly developed into a prime vendor to the Indian armed forces having won a few prestigious awards recently.

Apparently they hold a few IPRs which have NatSec implications which probably explains the reason the US was so malleable to setting up a fab in India in some sort of a JV (?) . What exactly does the US bring to this venture is not clear as of now ?
