LCA TEJAS MK-I & MK-IA: News and Discussion

For a deal to be done between a buyer and a seller a price needs to be agreed between the parties.

1 The price cannot be below the lowest price at which the seller is prepared lo sell
2 The price cannot be above the highest price at which the buyer is prepared lo buy

In this situation (new engine) I think that India's highest price is below the lowest price of the seller. If I am right, the last ten years of negotiations have been a waste of time. as will all future negotiations be.

Without the parties shifting on price minima and maxima there will never be a deal on a new engine for AMCA.
Nothing more to add.
I fully agree.

Weight of M88 : different sources gave me a slightly under 900kg.

Agree .. I kinda was playing with ChatGPT where I gave strict condition to source it from OEM sites only mentioning sites - after varying figures being spouted and several fine tuning I got the table. What you can do is pick HTML from previous post and make amends for EJ200 and M88.

IN20 version has 89kN thrust, power output reasons at 83-87kN in India I learnt.... Still kaveri is near 200kg heavier even if the thrust matched.

We should fix it on a drone without afterburner & moved on to Kaveri 2.
Source for this ?

A parliamentary panel report, tabled in Parliament recently, stated that the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk2, which is under design and development, will be a day and night capable, all-weather multi-role combat aircraft with adequate self-defence capability to operate in a dense and hostile AD environment.

"The aircraft would be a potent platform designed around a higher thrust engine, better performance metrics featuring an integral Unified Electronic Warfare Suite (UEWS) for survivability, new Digital Flight Control Computer (DFCC) and improved maintainability compared to the LCA Mk1/1A. LCA Mk2 is intended to replace Mirage-2000, MiG-29 and Jaguar aircraft of the IAF," the panel said.

On its predecessor, the report said IAF has received and operationalised two squadrons of Tejas Mk1 ac and these are being employed for operational roles and participated in the recently concluded international exercise Tarang Shakti.

The IAF contracted for procurement of 83 LCA Mk1A and deliveries were planned to commence from February 2024. However, the programme faced delays due to design and development issues.

"The IAF has also progressed as case for procurement of additional 97 LCA Mk1A aircraft for which AoN was accorded and RFP was issued," the report said, quoting the defence ministry. With these acquisitions, IAF will have 220 LCA Mk1 & Mk1A ac, it added.

The report also said the number of IAF fighter squadrons has reduced in recent years due to the phasing out of ageing variants of the MiG-21, the MiG-23 and the MiG-27 aircraft. According to the panel, the shortage is being addressed through "multi-pronged" approaches to minimise the impact.

The "multi-pronged" approach to mitigate the fall in squadron numbers is something of a fantasy. The only existing prong in the "multi-pronged" approach to bolster squadron numbers is buying more Su-30MKI. fighters. Buying more Mk1A won't get extra fighters delivered to IAF faster. Mk1A and Su-30MKI are the only new fighters IAF will be receiving before 2030 to maintain squadron numbers unless India can quickly buy some M2K or Rafale from l'Armee de l'Air - another prong. What's the likelihood of that happening?

Of course, yet another prong would be to do a government-government deal to buy 36/54/72 of one of the MRFA candidates that could be delivered quickly (forgetting Make-in-India). Expensive. Against stated policy. It depends on how long GOI is prepared to spend with a severely weakened air force. But then, if the GOI sees the problem as being addressed... what need to do anything?

Isee in idrw today that analyst are pessimistic of getting any Mk1A export orders.

I agree. However, I think that Tejas Mk2 should find some potential buyers. IMO in the coming years it would be worth pursuing any non no-hoper Mk1A opportunities (as Malaysia was) to sharpen marketing and selling skills. They will be needed to persuade countries interested in Tejas Mk2 to select it and sign on the dotted line. If an export contract for Mk1A happens to be won, so much the better!

I mean most users are retiring their Jet Trainers and LiFTs and there would be a huge vaccum. In fact most countries don't want a pure LCA but rather a LiFT, otherwise they would just go for a twin engine plane. If only IAF had foresight, they could had envisaged a plane like MAKO fulfilling all 3 roles of AJT, LCA and LiFT(Export) with Stealth Airframe shaping and semi-recessed weapons bay. Especially now the HAL Sitara AJT is a dumpster fire, such program if started would had resulted in like atleast 400 LCA and 200 AJT variants. Basically a Stealth optimized heavier FA-50.
